Second signing for the manchester phoenix is number 8 GREG WOOD!
Personally think this is an excellent signing. Gives 100% every game, chases everything, gets the goals and assists and is a massive team player.
Well done TH!
Whats everyone elses thoughts?

Hmmmmm.......
Seems like i could be the only one to think this, but i was hoping for a lot more from Greg this season.
Now i'm not saying he's been rubbish or anything, because he hasn't. But he just hasn't lived up to what i expected of him this year. He hasn't stuck out as amazing in this league, as i thought he would.
But as i've said elsewhere, it is a season for adjustments for the whol organisation, and if Greg can keep at it and start finding the extras we all know he has, he'll be invaluable next year.

Hi All,
I don't think he has been given the ice time that he should have been given as with several of the other Brits. Hopefully next season he will shine more.

I would like to see a couple of those southern based seasoned brits up here, Along with Wallace who in my opinion has taken a hell of a lot of pressure (scoring wise ) from TH ,what is it with some of you guys on here (especially here) and the official forum .
Has TH personaly offended you and yours because I cannot believe the stick that he gets .Yes I appreciate that he does not seem to appear to trust the Brits for long periods on ice but cmon cut the guy some slack he does what HE thinks is best for the team ,thats his job and I know whose opinion/judgement I would take if it came down to a choice ...TH--25+ years as a professional player /coach/International /should have played in the show v You so called experts(yes I know some of you guys play rec hockey) who love to impose their opinions on everyone hence why you moved here ... Yep no brainer there then eh ... Looks like I am joining Therat on the banned list

Can't see you getting banned from this forum unless you personally attack a poster.
And i'm sure you'll get a full account of why some folk don't like the way TH does his job, now you've asked.
However, i, myself, have never played hockey (can't even skate), and i've only been watching the sport 4 or 5 years, so i tend to duck out of conversations about how a team is/should be run, as i don't really comprehend all that is involved.
My personal opinion on Tony Hand, is that he is still an awesome player, and is probably an excellent coach. However, i think he struggles to balance the two sometimes, and it stands out a fair bit, hence the stick he gets.
If he wasn't so valuable points-wise to us as a skating player, i'd be crying out for him to concentrate fully on his coaching role.

Yes i do play rec and armed forces hockey and did come through a junior system plus my best mate use to be the equipment manager (and told TH where he can shove his f*ckin job, coz the way he AND the Brits got treated) so yeah i am stating my opinion of the guy because i feel I’ve have a VERY little insight into what goes on behind that changing room door, plus more through coming up through the junior system i KNOW i have a better idea of the shit young hockey players can get then some fans with rose coloured glasses on that have never come close to riding the pine pony. Im not imposing anything, im stating my opinion on here because its a FORUM and i can, unlike the official where some jobsworth tosser will chuck you off for disagreeing with them.

Yep no brainer there then eh ... Looks like I am joining Therat on the banned list Hey JCB, Just to clear some things up, I have never said that I am an expert, I have watched hockey for many years and I have my own opinions on how the game should be played, it would be fair to say that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, unless it is a dictatorship and you are forced to follow the opinions of the dictator, I think it is also fair to say that is why this forum has been set up to give the freedom of speech to those who want it. I would imagine that back into the depths of time when battles were being fought and the conquerers kicked the heads of their vanquished around a field, there would be two people on the perimiter argueing about the way that it took place, so being a player in the sport is not a pre-requesit of having an opinion. I have never played hockey but I have the experience of virtually all of the different aspects of hockey, from organising hockey leagues to helping my son get though his coaching cetificate, I have even been a roller hockey referee, although this is a different sport it is quite close with lots of the rules being the same. Having said that it does not mean that any other person, who may have only the slightest knowledge of the sport, that their viewpoint isn't as valid as mine. One thing I don't understand though, is why you use forums as you say your choice would be the opinion/judement of the coach yet you voice your opinions on this forum, it seems to me as though you have double standards, you are prepared to use forums but don't like viewpoints that difer from yours, in that case stick to the official forum and be indoctrinated by those who claim to be experts. Getting onto Tony Hand, at the start of this season I made my feeling known on how Tony Hand should deal with this season on the official forum, in a nutshell I said that he should concentrate more on coaching than playing, as a result of this post I was slated by some other users of the forum, this showed a complete lack of tollerance of other peoples views, I wonder if that same post were to be put up on the forum now how many users of the forum would have changed their viewpoint. Unfortunately it is the nature of sport that the person who gets "cut the least slack" is the coach because he is the one who should know the most and have the ability to relate that knowledge and experience to the squad of players getting them to play to the system that he want to be played but as he changes his lines so often, alot of that being forced line changes by him playing 6-8 minute shifts resulting in him playing far too much of the hour played, this unsettles other players and it shows that he has a lack of trust in them, is he trying to show that the club needs to rely on him as the star player, it also demeans the other players as he is showing a complete lack of regard for them. This is a development league and he should understand this, having the young brits sat on the bench for long periods of time does not instill anything good in them, it only makes them think that they have done something to upset the coach or they aren't good enough, one thing that it does do is allow them to cool off so when they are expected to get their legs going they aren't warmed up. At a meet the players event before the season I asked Tony Hand about how he was going to mentor the young players in his squad, from his reply it was obvious to me that he hadn't got a clue what I was talking about. If Tony Hand were to stay more on the bench he would be able to watch the game and see how it is playing out and adjust his tactics accordingly. On paper this club should be running away with this league, the calibre of the squad is outstanding, even the defence is a good squad but Tony Hands lack of defensive coaching is letting it down, I doubt there would be little arguement that Tony Hand is one of the best, if not the best British forward ever but he has no defensive skills at all, as an example, just look back at the power plays that we have, Tony Hand sets himself up on the Blue line as the fourth attacker, the opposition now get possession of the puck, the first thing they do is pass beyond where Tony Hand is, their forward picks the puck up and more often than not gets a shot on goal, a lot resulting in a short handed goal. He is not a defensive minded coach and unfortunately in this league you have to be well rounded in all aspects of coaching. In my opinion as to where this team is failing is that they are not enjoying the hockey that they are playing, it says a lot when you get the players saying that they enjoy the locker room when they should be saying that they enjoy the hockey because they are having FUN. I could go on and on about this but this would be a bit of a "War and Peace" I think I have said enough to explain about Tony Hand. Pete

Hey JCB,
I forgot to ask, this is a genuine question, no hidden meaning or agenda.
You say that Tony Hand should be "cut some slack", the question is in two parts, the first to be answered as yourself, a fan then secondly answer as Neil Morris.
When should that "slack" end? For example, at the end of the season if no Silverware has been won, the end of next season or the end of the season after that.

Glad to see Greg signing again for next season!! Hard working and isn't afraid to fight for the puck. The kind of player I like to watch rather than a show boater who only wants the glory of scoring a goal!!

I appreciate that he does not seem to appear to trust the Brits for long periods on ice ...... When Tony very first signed as coach we happened to be in Cardiff on the day it was announced. We were in the bar after the game looking at the plans for their new rink and Shannon Hope came over and asked what we thought about our new coach. I told him I wasn't happy because he wouldn't play his Brits but Shannon told me that any coach will play anybody if he trusts them enough and has the confidence in them. I think that's where Tony's problem lies .... he doesn't want them to make mistakes ..... but that's how they'll learn and he can't keep taking on all the responsibility by himself. Recently he seems to be on the ice more and more but although he's still a good player I don't think this season he's been as effective as in the past. I think his coaching methods need to change as well. More encouragement and motivation instead of 'you did that wrong you're benched' it should be 'you did that wrong but don't worry, get back out there and try again and you'll get it right next time'.

I would like to see a couple of those southern based seasoned brits up here, I've always said Gary Clarke would score goals for fun if he was on a line with Tony. Another very talented player is Adam Carr, MK's captain. You don't hear his name mentioned a lot but watch him in the games and he's always on the score sheets with a goal or an assist. .... but I've probably jinxed him now lol Along with Wallace ...... I agree I'd like to see Wallace back and show us what he's capable of over a full season. Been very impressed with him so far.

Pete Read and digested your war and peace . I bet you are glad that you have got that little lot of your chest .No double standards from me I was as everyone else always says just expressing my opinion. Whilst I do not agree with alot of what you say whether on here or the other one I can accept it. Re cut some slack ...firstly I could not possibly answer for Neil Morris ..he like you, me and everyone else has his opinion. As for me I will back TH all the way. OK call me a happy clapper but as I have said before he has forgotten more than I will ever know about hockey

personally alot of people dont like tony for personal reasons (as stated earlier about the way he treats people) and therefore when things go bad, their negative opinion of the man himself gets carried over onto the way he coaches and plays. i am sick of hearing the same old same about him. Ok i might get called a happy clappy or wearing rose tinted glasses but hey what knew about me getting called. but on a serious note some of the things that TH has done cannot be argued with. Look back at some of the excellent players he brought in (tallari, molin, beaurguard (sp?)) just to name a few. Tally up his point scoring and hes wiping the floor with a lot of the younger lads around. Ok the brits didnt get the ice time in the elite league but some did i.e luke boothroyd. i like the young brit lads and talk to a few of them and of course i would love to see them all do well because they train hard but i dont have that power because i am not the coach. At the end of the day you cannot say that he is not doing what HE thinks is best for the club because if that is his main priority.
