It's been a long time since I've seen a post on a forum start with "I've a friend that works at the Phoenix office, and they say...." ;D

Hi All,
One rumour that was being bandied about over the weekend in Coventry was that Costigan had announced his last game. Maybe they will be getting someone in who actualy likes the fans. Never a fan of his delivery.

Never a fan of his delivery. Pete Can't really comment on the "actualy likes the fans" bit (I don't think I've ever spoken to him), but I quite like his style of delivery - a sort of "just the facts". Sure, I don't think that style is that great at getting the crowd going, but if the rumour of the "Mascot suit" is true, I think that would really help in that respect. I'd rather have someone with that type of delivery than the "local Radio DJ" style we had at weekend.

Costigan's delivery was just fine imo, although not a very engaging character, can't say he's even said hi to me in however many years of hockey watching over here He's a typical Blueshite fan I guess. I HATE OTT announces of the John Hammond mode. They just make me cringe, so here's hoping they never attempt a different style. Richard of the Rev variety was always very good to I reckon when he stepped in when Costigan was away.

Hi All,
I would prefer a straight no nonsense type of delivery, like the Revs or even Mike Landers. To me there are two different types of announcers, the entertainer or the straight man, the problem with Costigan is that he tries to be entertaining when he hasn't got it in him, if he just played it as the straight man he would have more credability but he brings things in that aren't in his nature. One thing that is foolish to do is bring in items that are "in jokes" that only a few will understand, Costigan isn't the only announcer that does this it happens with others as over this weekend in Coventry. Two people who are very highly connected with the Phoenix organisation have told me, on seperate occasions, that Costigan doesn't like the fans, this isn't a good starting point if you are trying to engage the crowd into some form of atmosphere. I personally found his script very boring and repetitive, same thing week after week. At least he stopped mentioning football half way through the season, I could never understand why a hockey announcer would be bringing to the attention of people who have come to see a hockey match that there is football, I have nothing against football but the club is trying to market hockey and increase the crowd but the announcer is reminding the crowd that there is football also available to watch.
Liz Drakeley does a good job announcing, her voice is clear and precise, very easily understood.
I think it is a good thing that they are having a Mascot suit made, this was announced at the Q&A session at the Cresta Court last month, it is being paid for by one of the fans. This is a good idea as it means that it becomes a mascot not someone dressed up with face paint. I was never a fan of the mascot but over the years this has changed to acceptance because his antics have been modified.

Never a fan of his delivery. Pete Think there may be some truth in that rumour. I have done an article for the programme each week this season and when I offered my services at the end of the season for next season his reply was along the lines of "we'll think about that if I'm still doing it" or words to that effect.

I personally think that Andy has done an absolutely brilliant job as match night announcer. At one time I would have agreed with Pete that he isn't a"fans person", but I would say over the past couple of seasons he has mellowed and interacts more with the fans than he ever used to.
Maybe Andy is reviewing some of the jobs that he does for the club. Don’t forget he doesn't just announce on game nights, he does/is involved in lots of other things and it must take up a lot of his time.
I know we are all entitled to our opinion and this is mine.

Well, it's not really a rumour anymore, thanks to the Vipers organisation jumping the gun, but apparently we have signed Dean Holland.

Phoenix have been linked again with Adam Calder in a player / Assistant coach role now that he won't be taking up the coaching job in Braehead.
